CRYSTAL LAKE – School is never quite out for summer when it comes to District 47’s buildings.
Summer is the time to fix up, replace, clean, paint, tear down and install.
Each of District 47’s buildings and grounds needs various repairs and maintenance, Operations Director David Schuh said. The board recently approved spending $237,600 for projects to address those needs. The work will commence this summer.
Carpeting on the lower level of North Elementary in Room 40 and the outside corridor will be replaced with tile at a cost of $10,000.
CoventryElementary’s music room’s lights and ceiling tiles will be replaced at a cost of $1,500.
Eventheadministration center needs some maintenance help. Fixing drainage problems in the parking lot and south driveway will cost $13,000.
Some schools need playground repairs – filling cracks and resealing for $5,000 at Indian Prairie and new blacktop for $3,500 at Coventry.
Canterbury’s concrete window sills are cracked and need repair at a cost of $3,200.
Board member Jeff Larkins, who serves on the Operations Committee, said they would come forward to the full board to recommend more money for the district’s maintenance projects.
“We never like to talk about money increases, but I have to tell you – you can see from the spread sheets it’s getting harder and harder to spread a dollar,” Larkins said.
“We have maintenance issues that are being neglected because we don’t have the money to do it.”
Board member Ruth Scifo said the district prided itself on keeping up building maintenance and trying to be proactive.
“Like any other district, we have been dealing with funding issues and how you balance the various departments,” Scifo said.
Recommendations from the Operations Committee likely would be referred to the Finance Committee before the whole board would act on it for the next budget cycle, she said.
“We’ve always had about $250,000 appropriated for summer work projects,” Scifo said. “We have not appropriated more, despite inflation and more buildings.”
